supper or dinner, what do you call that meal?

With respect to dinner, N Cal ca. 1940's & 50's  eating dinner at noon had
implications of rusticity but even in the sticks it had to be a regular
sit-down meal on real plates to be called dinner:  "Q. Are you going to stay
and have dinner?  A. Don't have time, I'll just grab some lunch".
