I've been checking the NYC phone books (Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens) for the entries "bakeries," "delicatessens," "restaurants," and "sandwiches."
"Hero" appears to show up 1952-1953...Ads really started in the late 1940s. The 1930s phone books don't have much...I'll do other, non-heroic foods separately.

1950 STATEN ISLAND YELLOW PAGES, pg. 133, col. 1. A large ad for Margaret's Luncheonette ("TOPS ON STATEN ISLAND") describes "LARGE DELICIOUS SANDWICHES" that are "A MEAL IN THEMSELVES."

1952 BROOKLYN YELLOW PAGES, pg. 787, Col. 1. Gallicchio's Sandwich Shop, 587 Carroll, advertises "ITALIAN SANDWICHES."

1952 MANAHATTAN YELLOW PAGES, pg. 1535, col. 3. Wilson Sandwich Shop advertises "Italian Products Our Specialty." Tony's Sandwich Shop & Restaurant advertises "Italian & American Club Sandwiches."
