AUSTRALIAN VERNACULAR--There's a wonderful article, "The unsung death of
vernacul-ah" by Kevin Murray, THE AGE, Saturday, 23 December 2000, pg. 5,
col. 1. Maybe someone can search (I'm at a coin machine)
(theage.fairfax.com.au) and see if there's a URL for it?
GASTROBOT--Discussed in THE AGE, 24 December 2000, pg. 11, col. 1. Also,
Slugbot and robopoop. Check Nexis.
PLUTO PUP--a hot dog on a stick. Seen everywhere.
AUSTRALIAN TRAFFIC JAM--what happened when cows blocked the road for us.
THIS & THAT SALE--at various towns.
MIDDENS--OED? What aboriginals had.
HELL OR MELBOURNE--Captain James "Bully" Forbes of the Schomberg said that he
was sailing to "Hell or Melbourne" in 1855. His ship crashed on the
Shipwreck Coast. "Hell or Melbourne" was spotted as a drink that has lena
banana, midori, creme de cacao, and cream.
GREASY JOE'S--a place in Sydney that advertises the world's greatest
hamburgers. Probably the cousin of Sloppy Joe. I didn't go in--it may have
a web site, though.
