AP Makes Style Changes

The Associated Press, as of yesterday, has dropped the use of courtesy titles Miss,
Mrs., and Ms. in almost all news reports.

Both men and women will be identified on first reference by first and last name. On
second reference, both will be identified by last name only.

AP style had suggested courtesy titles for women on second and subsequent references
unless a woman requested they be removed. Now writers and editors will wait for a
woman to request courtesy titles before using them.

The upcoming edition of "The Associated Press Stylebook" will reflect the change. A
vast majority of the news cooperative's newspaper members expressed a desire to drop
the courtesy titles.
