The weed of crime bears bitter fruit

Sorry to keep pestering you, Barry, but maybe you'd be the first one
able to answer this question: What cartoon series played on "Crime
doesn't pay" with the variant "Crime doesn't pay -- much"?

I remember that restatement from the Sunday funnies, and have the
impression that the date was somewhere in 1940-1945. (But that's a date
for my first recollection, and says nothing about when it first appeared
in the strip.)

I don't know whether this is straight memory, or simply a readjustment
of what I think I recall to something I remember more clearly. This
sounds like the kind of thing I'd expect to see in the old Smokey Stover
cartoons. (Along with other great mottoes: Notary Sojac, for one.)

And what strip had little signboards saying "Nov smoz ka pop"? Smokey
Stover again?
