I think it's too bad that the Guidestar summary says:
The American Dialect Society is an association of scholars and others
interested in studying the English language in North America, past and
present.
whereas the ADS site adds:
- and of other languages, or dialects of other languages, influencing it or
influenced by it.
It's probably that way because of a word limit, but I think it makes us sound
like guardians of English.
