A Celticist friend, on smashing:

David:

When I went to add the "smashing" etymology to my
files, I learned that I had recorded the assertion
from an semi-reliable source as early as 1976---traced
to Scottish Gaelic rather than to Irish. The original
spelling is: Is math sin. The first s is pronounced
as an s but the one in sin is sh. Scottish Gaels,
despite their poverty, were less likely to become
members of the urban proletariat.

Still seems fanciful.

Best,

Jim
