Who invented Fortune Cookies?
In the 1930s there was a need to increase tourism in the San Francisco
Chinatown area. It was well known that tourists liked to have desert after
eating a meal.
Kay Heong, a San Franciscan restaurant owner, thought of the idea to fold over
chinese cookies and hide little pieces of paper in them which contained a
fortune
or a "pearl of wisdom." This idea was successful in bringing tourists into the
restaurants and is still used to this day!
