Thanks for the URL for Stauffer's Baking Company, York, PA. I e-mailed
them about the origin of "Snickerdoodle" and didn't get a response.
Now, about Pennsylvania DUTCH, I have serious reservations. I didn't
find "snickerdoodle" or a similar name in about a dozen Penn. Dutch cook
books.
This is from WORCESTER EVENING POST PRIZE COOK BOOK (1929), pg. 236, col.
1:

    _Snippie Doodles_
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup milk
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup raisins
2 tablespoons shortening
1/2 teaspoon salt

Cream sugar, egg, and shortening; add milk, then sift in dry
ingredients; flour the raisins, and add to above mixture. Drop by spoonfuls
on large flat pan, sprinkle with sugar. Bake 20 minutes. These are
delightful and simple to make.--MRS. RUTH DUMORE, 545 Park Ave., Worcester.
