BEAR HUGS

     The Wall Street Journal, 29 March 2000, pg. C1, cols. 3-6, has "Raiders of the Lost Decade: '80s-Style Mergers Return."  Much of the language is the same, too--white knights, poison pills, green mail, et al.
    There's a graph about "'Jumped' deals, or deals challenged by a bid from another company."
    Col. 2 has a favorite of mine:

    Behind the scenes, companies are getting hit with "bear hugs" (unfriendly merger proposals) while others are weighing hostile bids and hiring teams of bankers, lawyers, and public relations professionals to prepare takeover defenses.

BIG APPLE ("HAVEN'T A CLUE")

   I decided to write a response to Abuzz (www.abuzz.com, a service associated with the New York Times) that the "Big Apple" does not comes from 19th century whores.  Guess it skipped over those two 19th century Making of America databases somehow, eh?
  William Safire, the New York Times, and New York City could put a stop to this, but they allow this slander with their silence.  Many years ago I volunteered my time, money and research (free!) for an official city "Big Apple" web site with the songs, dance, and newspaper clippings on it.  No one would even reply.
  Yesterday, Abuzz sent me an e-mail that someone had asked the Big Apple question AGAIN, and I might want to reply AGAIN.  I checked to see if anyone had replied to this recent one, and sure enough, someone had.  With the 19th century whore stuff!  You can see what the internet poster had in mind: don't know if this is true or a malicious slander, but hey, here it is!!
  I was gonna attach that, but I have much better.  Mike Wallce, Pultizer Prize-winning co-author of GOTHAM and a star of the Ric Burns documentary series NEW YORK, is sponsoring a series on New York City History at the Gotham Center.  I asked him why I wasn't invited.  I also asked him if he even knows anything about me, or anything I'd done.
