Dexter Mason's TIPPLE AND SNACK (1931), pg. 11: "Japanese pretzels go
well with this one. Serve plenty of them in a deep dish. Most guests like
them, and they lead you on more than salted peanuts do."
Dexter Mason's THE ART OF DRINKING (1930), pg. 19:
JAPANESE
1 part gin
1/2 part lemon juice
1/4 part orgeat syrup
Chop very fine some Spanish Cresent olives, pickled onion and deviled
ham. Heap on saltine crackers. Garnish with paprika and parsley.
Celery stuffed with Roquefort cheese is good with this.
"Japanese cocktail" is also in Jerry Thomas's book on mixing drinks
(1862).
I've gotta escape from New York now...
