Incidentally, while the French were fiddling around with the Latin
"gubernare," they also produced the word "cybernetique," meaning "the art
of governing."

I don't think the French or anyone else took that from "gubernare", but rather
from Greek; and not from "kubernan" but from "kubernetes", meaning 'governor or
steersman [one who steers a ship]'.
