Re Mugwump: The Mama Cass group was the "Mugwumps".  The song in which it is mentioned was by the Mamas and Papas, a history of themselves.  I forget the name, but someone out there will know it.

The Mugwumps, importantly, were a sort of political group in 19th c. US history.  Again, others may have more details.
