I confess I never knew where first base was . . .

The most common terms we've recorded for something in this territory though
are "mugging" (kissing) and, the far more common, "macking".  According to my
students, macking covers a wide range of behavior from flirting to passionate
kissing and heavy petting.  Both of these terms stop short of sex.
