jams, jellies, and preserves

It was wondered whether the 'jam/preserves' distinction was made in the
UK, considering that that 'jam/jelly' distiction is not. I've now done
supermarket research. Yes, UK has preserves. According to AHD jam is a
sub-type of preserves anyhow--preserves are apparently just chunkier
than jam. Marmalade comes in orange, lemon, and grapefruit varieties.
And then there's conserve, which is 'jam made of fruits stewed in
sugar', according to AHD. According to the labels at the supermarket,
it's 'continental extra jam', 'gently cooked in open pans', and without
exception 'imported from France'.
Sweetly and fruitily,
Lynne
