As I recall (and here memory might be playing tricks), it was the
convienence store chain 7-11 that advertised smoothies, and sent the word
into general circulation. I do remember one of their TV ad campaigns where
they had an actor who greatly reminds me of "Larry" on the Letterman show,
who'd give the 'Oh thank Heaven for 7-11" slogan, tho' they were advertising
smoothies before then. This would have been the mid 70s I think.
