I generarlly follow the stress on the first syllable for nouns and on the
second syllable for verbs (generalizing from similar patterns, such as  RE
search,/re SEARCH; DE fect/de FECT, RE ject/re JECT,  MIS fire/mis
FIRE)--hence, DE tail/de TAIL. ) I've also heard RE tard/re TARD and, in some
dialects,  IN vite (for invitation) /IN vite and .   I'm not sure of the
rule, though.
