Those numbers seem way too few--mythically so (after all, don't the Esquimaux use five hundred words just for snow? All of them epithets?). The well-regarded Dale-Chall readability formula is based on a list of three thousand words that fourth-graders are supposed to know, and fourth graders are not usually famous for their large vocabularies.
