barrow/borrow

Thanks David for helping me to refresh my memory. The word that escaped
me is 'depletion', which Black's (5th) notes is "The process by which
the cost or other basis of a natural resource . . . is recovered upon
extraction and sale of the resource." Or, "An emptying, exhausting or
wasting of assets."

In Delaware, some of the places that were known as borrow pits would
otherwise be called quarries or sand pits. As they filled with water,
they would look like a small lake.

For some reason, the word 'depletion' gave me problems on my exams,
possibly because of an exhausted memory, or wasted asset, from reading
through the accounting texts.
