During the Spanish colonial period in the Americas, a cimarron (accent on
the o) was a runaway slave. There were numerous communities of runaways
throughout the Caribbean, and some of these communities had sophisticated
political and military organization, sometimes conducting guerilla warfare
with the outlying colonial settlements and freeing slaves.
