Connotative differences in spelling

In many technical registers "gage" is considered the preferred spelling. In
some vocations the term may carry the further implication of a fixed device,
a go-no go "gage" (to determine whether a specified measurement has been
reached) rather than a variable measuring device, like a steam pressure
"gauge".
