Oh, all right. When the OED comes calling, you gotta answer. I had to
spend all night to go through my stuff to find this.
I called to the Transit Museum in Brooklyn. As you may recall from the
ADS-L archives, the Transit Museum was without an archivist for about a year,
and I wasn't allowed to look through the SUBWAY SUN.
I got a call back from the Transit Museum. They have NO information on
"Subway Series," and they've looked through the SUBWAY SUN. They'd like to
know what I have.
From THE SPORTING NEWS, 17 September 1936, pg. 3, col. 7:
_"SUBWAY SERIES" MAY_
_SET NEW CASH MARK_
(...) In any event, New York is getting ready for its fourth World's Series
on a five-cent fare--its first since 1923--and is all set tosend this series
soaring to new financial records.
