I remember an incident at a Euralex meeting in 1985, in Zurich.  A group of
Scandinavian scholars wished to bar the attendance of 2 Euralex members
because they hailed from South Africa, at a time when that country was under
international sanctions.  These 2 were not government reps, merely
lexicographers who happened to live in SA.  In fact, one was not white.

Euralex has a rule in its bylaws saying that the organization will not take
any political stands.  So when the Scandinavian group presented their
objection at the general meeting, the motion was ruled out of order owing to
the bylaws.

Would that ALL scholarly groups handled things as Euralex did that day.  I'm
thinking of MLA, for instance.
