E-JIHAD

From the NEW YORK POST, 27 October 2000, pg. 2, col. 6:

_"e-Jihad"_
_extremists_
_tangle up_
_Israeli Web_
Islamic extremist groups, opening a new front in the holy war against
Israel, have launched sophisticated cyberspace attacks that have paralyzed
major Israeli government Web sites, The Post has learned.
The carefully coordinated attacks--dubbed the e-Jihad--are originating in
the United States and Britain and have shut down Web sites of the Israeli
Defense Forces, the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the Israeli Parliament this
week.

MISC.

OED ON CBS--David Shulman told me that he just got a call from a Joel
Bernstein from CBS. They want to profile Shulman in a story about the OED.
I don't know anything more.

SHOPSPLOITATION--This word was used by Alexandra Jacobs in the NEW YORK
OBSERVER, 30 October 2000, pg. 26, col. 3, but there are no Dow Jones
database hits. A "'shopsloitation' event" is described.

WORK STANDING UP--Well, Michael Dell does it, so doesn't everybody? Is this
some big internet joke I don't know about? From the NEW YORK OBSERVER, 30
October 2000, pg. 32, col. 4: "... may either be home-office shut-ins or
come to the office nad have to work standing up (note to the reader: this is
an e-joke)..."

MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE RANCH--The Periodicals Contents Index has WRITER'S
DIGEST, June 1956, pg. 13 title of article: "_Meanwhile...back at the ranch_
Remember this old Western crutch for transitions? These days you have to
move your reader about more subtly." (What does OED have on "meet
cute"?--ed.)
