Ayto's Oxford slang dictionary shows the above Australian senses, plus one
more: "to shout [abuse/complaints]".
Apparently "rort" is derived from the adjective "rorty", British slang
dating from 1882 (says the book), meaning "boisterous"/"noisy"/"coarsely
vital"/"crudely comic"/etc. [The word used in the sense of
"fraud"/"swindle"/"manipulate"/etc. might possibly have a somewhat
different origin?]
The obscene NZ senses might follow naturally.
What if any is the connection between the NZ "rort" = "f*ck" and the
Australian "root" = "f*ck"? [Is "root" used like this in NZ too?]
What if any is the connection between "rorty" and "rowdy"?
