And the boundary between them?  For us Californians (as we called
ourselves--no other term such as 'northern' was needed) Southern California
began at a pass through the Tehachapi Mountains called the Grapevine, which
used to be a formidable obstacle for motorists.  I think that this was the
same as the traditional boundary between the old Spanish (later Mexican)
provinces of Alta California del Norte and Alta California del Sur,
