   Political and military leaders justify the preference for sanitized, high-tech warfare by arguing that the American people won't tolerate casualties anymore, that support for the mission will evaporate as soon as the bodybags start coming home.  The military analyst Edward Luttwak has even mounted an elaborate justification for the "bodybag syndrome": He argues that families are more reluctant to lose children than they once were, because they have fewer of them today.  (Actually, the decline in family size predates casualty phobia.)
