As usual, recommendations should go to the poster, not (just) to the list.

Subject: course in varieties of American English

Dear Linguist Listers--

I will be teaching a course in varieties of American English, with a heavy
emphasis on African American English Vernacular. This will be a General
Education course for non-majors at a small regional university. I am
looking for ideas on both topics to include and texts to use. Is there a
good single textbook that could serve as a base for the course? I envision
the students doing field research on the language of their environment so I
am looking for a textbook that has both a theoretical and practical
component. Videos of relevance? Great ideas for field reserach that have
worked for you? I will do a summary. Thanks.
