Help in retrieving old train of thought

Some time ago (sometime between 1996 and 1999) there was some discussion
on ADS-L about the case of the a public official who ended up losing his
job after his use of the word "denigrate" was taken as a racial slur... or
that's how I think it went, but I haven't been able to find these postings
in either archive. Was the crucial word maybe not "denigrate", after all?
Could anyone remind me of enough relevant details so I could dig this up,
either in the ADS-L archives or on google.com?
