GUEST WORKER--Yes, a quick computer search shows that it probably comes from the German term.  The Wall Street Journal article, though, was talking about people from Mexico.

SMASH MOUTH--I first heard it in the 1980s, but I thought it had a possible relation in the Beatles' song "Come Together"--"toe-jam football."  Run that one through the databases.
