Apologies in advance for bothering the group instead of looking this up:
in my lovely copy of Allan Metcalf's "How We Talk", a map from DARE on p.
6 indicates where "long i" is pronounced as "ah" rather than "ah-ee".
Could someone explain to me how area 2 on the map is different from area
1? Phonetic environments for "ah" are different, is that it?
Many thanks and apologies and all other conceivably applicable speech
acts,
-Mai
