SWISS STEAK

John Mariani cites Jean Anderson, who devotes page 91 of her AMERICAN CENTURY COOKBOOK to "Swiss Steak." The earliest she could find is 1915.
   From the AMERICAN COOKERY magazine:

June/July 1910-May 1911
Steak, Swiss...284

June/July 1912-May 1913
Steak, Swiss...154

   This is way too easy.

UPSIDE-DOWN CAKE

   I love this name. I see it's in AMERICAN COOKERY, June/July 1925:

Cakes, "upside-down"...54

SMASH MOUTH

David Barnhart posted this. It looks like the reporter gave us what, a day?
From the WALL STREET JOURNAL, 16 February 2001, pg. 1, col. 4:

_Smash-Mouth: Sick_
_Of the Term? Sorry,_
_There's No Stopping It_
Blame the XFL If You'd Like,
But It's Old and Seems to Fit
   The Popular Culture Well

The article mentioned Jack Youngblood, but not John Madden, the announcer who helped popularize it in the late 1970s-early 1980s.
I haven't had time to do any work on the term.
Not to be picky, but why does this make the front page when I've done 1,000 terms just as important and get A20??

COMMUTER FAMILIES

From the WALL STREET JOURNAL, 14 February 2001, pg. B1, col. 1:

_Technology Is Helping_
_"Commuter Families"_
_To Stay in Touch_
YOU'VE HEARD of commuter marriages--couples without children who work in separate cities during the wee, then reunite at home on weekends. Now comes a new trend: the commuter family.
More parents are raising their children in one U.S. city while Dad or Mom works in another.

--------------------------------------------------------
HOTEL RAGE

   Still raging.
From the WALL STREET JOURNAL, 16 February 2001, pg. W1, col. 2:

_Hotel Rage: Losing It in the Lobby_
Guest Gripes Hit Record Levels
   As Inns Overbook, Renovate;
   An Assault at the Ritz-Carlton

--------------------------------------------------------
BOOT SUMMIT

From the WALL STREET JOURNAL, 16 February 2001, pg. A9, col. 3:

_"Boot Summit" May Kick-Start Change in Mexico Ties_

I don't know what the "Boot Summit" is, but I know that no one wants to be a heel.

--------------------------------------------------------
DUMB TIME

From the interview with Barry Diller in the WALL STREET JOURNAL, 16 February 2001, pg. W4, col. 6:

_Mr. Diller:_ There was a break, and Isaid to Renee Zellweger, who was sitting next to me, "Let's go to the bathroom now." One of the most inopportune moments of "dumb time" ever.

Going to see a man about a dog is "dumb time"? "Dumb time" is not in the RHHDAS. It's not in the Cassell Dictionary of Slang. I haven't yet checked it on the computer databases.
I just want to add the the headline "Barry in Ladies' Room With Renee" did not involve me.
