I've always thought it was strange that the Southern expression "Why!" as in "Why, bless my soul!" was pronounced [waI] but the question was [hwaI]. That distinction has been around for a long time. And I too have observed that hw is disappearing in the South, but I'm 43 and still have it--always have. Lesa Dill Western Kentucky Univ.
