I think "braut" is short for "brautwurst".
As noted before, "hundewurst" (= "dog-sausage") could be interpreted as a
sausage made of dog, resembling a dog, or intended for consumption by a dog.
Similarly for "brautwurst", where "braut" is German for "bride"/"fiancée".
Then again maybe it's short for "bräutigamwurst" or so, with "bräutigam" =
"bridegroom"/"fiancé".
