BATIK
STORIES OF THE ISLAND WORLD
by Charles Nordhoff

1857
The book describes Iceland, Madagascar, Java, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand. "Running a _muck_" is on page 118.
OED and M-W have 1880 for "batik."
Pg. 119: ..._batik_, a cotton printer...

SEE NAPLES AND DIE (continued)
VISIT TO THE HOLY LAND, EGYPT, AND ITALY
by Ida Pfeiffer
Ingram, Cooke; London
1852
Ida Pfeiffer (1797-1858) wrote two books about her trips around the world. She also wrote about Iceland.
She had great subject matter, but boy, is she a lousy travel writer. The Italy section in this book not only doesn't have "pizza," but it doesn't even have "macaroni." She says simply "noodles" or "cheese bread" for these food terms. What a waste!
Another phrasing of "See Naples and Die" is this.
Pg. 295: This is the place of which the Neapolitans say, with some justice, "Hither should men come, and gaze, and die!"
