"De Hook" (was: "rush the can")

I have the feeling I've heard "de Hook" and am supposed to know what it
means, but if I did know, I've forgotten.  Does it refer to a particular
area of NYC originally known, in Dutch colonial days, as "de Hoek" (the
corner)?  Or is it something else entirely?
