"Gen up"

Someone wrote offlist to wonder if "gin up" actually occurs with "support."
I've heard and seen it used with "support." Via LEXIS/NEXIS, note for
example (among other cites) _USA Today_, 20 August 1999, where the lead
para. reports that lobbyists are planning to "gin up support for the
Republicans' $800-billion, ten-year tax cut." Very similar wording to the
NPR quotation that began this thread.
