I am unfamiliar with the term; I was raised in NorCal, spent 15 years in NYC
and have spent the last 5 in NE Iowa, and have never heard it in any of
these places. I would say 'knit cap', 'watch cap'; this is a tight fitting
cap that can cover the forehead and ears, a 'whole-skull cap' if you wish. A
stocking cap is the kind Santa's elves wear, the crown elongating into a
long 'tail', to hang at the back.
