   Checking my NEW DICKSON BASEBALL DICTIONARY at home here:

RAIN CHECK:  The first citation of 1884 was found by David Shulman.

LADIES DAY:  The first citation of 1883 was found by David Shulman.  Peter Tamony found an 1884 citation.  Barry Popik found an 1886 citation that states: "'Ladies' Day' is now six years of age."

   Darn, those guys are good.
   So this Abner Powell originated neither the rain check nor ladies' day in 1887.
