Greetings from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Just a short, scenic ride (especially for the fall colors) from NYC.
Lee Edwards Benning came here to research her OH, FUDGE!: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA'S FAVORITE CANDY (1990). A letter from 1921 had it that there was "fudge" here in 1887-1888, but Benning's first citation is from the VASSAR MISCELLANY, vol. 24, no. 8 (May 1895), pg. 397.
From the yearbook VASSARION (1894), pg. 124:
I came in and got a fudge.--F. L. R.
(Benning's book made other errors. I'll discuss them later if I have the energy...Not to be included in the OXFORD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN FOOD & DRINK--ed.)
