I hate "quotes"

Somebody with style once wrote about having this argument with a boss or
editor of his who also said he used quotes for emphasis. The writer
finally made his point, emphatically, by asking the boss/ed to imagine
seeing a newspaper article including the line:

   <name of boss> was seen at a party recently with his "wife".
