That must have been back when Thomas Bowdler was editing the OED.

If I may (I don't get much chance to use this, and will grab at any
opportunity) a friend once mistyped "diddle" as "dandle," to which I
replied:

In his youth a man can handle
Anything that comes his way.
He'll diddle, boff,
And have it off
With any girl who wants to play.

But I have searched my mind for times
I might have dandled some young miss.
A blank.
Is there some untried gambol
One can take beyond a kiss?
