It's true that Yahoo! inserts ads into the e-mails on the list.
That's what allows them to offer the service for free to users. The
service also allows file storage, polls, bookmark collections,
calendars, chat and some other community-building features. I don't
believe they send you anything outside of the mails which are part of
the list (although I think you need to insure that by setting your
mail preferences online).

For those interested I've posted a PDF of 'Some Deficiencies in our
English Languages' onto the group's web site, in the files section.
It's a scan of the original printing of the two speeches and prints
fairly well.
