Jewish Encyclopedia, volume IX (copyright 1905, 1909 in my edition) article
"New York" page 287 column 1:
"The Education al Alliance, with a daily attendance of nearly 7,000, is
located at East Broadway and Jefferson street [sic]...On the fourth floor of
the building is a free library, part of the New York Public Library system"
JE, volume X (copyright 1905, 1909 in my edition) article "Herman Rosenthal"
page 479 column 1:
"...in 1898 he accepted the post of chief of the Slavonic department, New
York Public Libary (Astor branch), a position he still (1905) retains. He
joined the editorial board of THE JEWISH ENCYCLOPEDIA as chief of the Russian
department in Dec., 1900"
JE, Volume VIII (copyright 1904, 1910 in my edition) article "Libraries"
mentions the NYPL twice. Page 73 column 2 in a list of "leading public
collections [of Judaica]"
"United States: the Jewish collection in the New York Public LIbrary (Schiff
foundation; about 17,000 vols.)" and page 75 column 2 "The most complete
classification of works in a Jewish collection is, however, the following,
made for the New York Public Library by A. S. Freidus, and reproduced by
permission of the director, Dr. John S. Billings [three pages of subject
headings follow]"
