I had high hopes for "latkes" here, but it was not to be.

Pg. 45: On the first night of Chanukkah, each child is presented with a funny little top, called a "trendel," which he may twirl round sharply, and watch as it spins itself out. It is sure to fall with one of its sides uppermost, and as each side bears a raised Hebrew letter, the fun of the game hinges upon which letter the player turns up to view.

Pg. 84: Meanwhile, in the kitchen, large quantities of Haman's three-cornered cakes are being baked, as also rolled cakes with (Pg. 85--ed.) citron and raisins and almonds all pounded together.
