I don't believe this has been mentioned on the list, and perhaps the
hardcore searchers already know about it, but for everyone else I'd
like to point out the existence of Paper of Record, an online archive
of historical newspapers. So far it seems to have mostly Canadian
newspapers (and will continue to do so, judging by the "coming soon"
list), with dates going back to the 19th century in most cases, and
into the 18th century in one. It includes several French newspapers
from Quebec.

The database is not free, though sample content is offered.
