Two famous sport-related quotations

I'm looking for the earliest known citations for two quite famous
sport-related quotations.

The first is (something like) "Winning isn't everything - it's the only thing".

The second (a response to a [journalist's?] question "Do you believe that
[enter name of game or sport] is a matter of life and death?"), is
(something like) "No, it's more important than that".

Can any ADS-L subscriber offer evidence, or perhaps just an opinion, on
either of these? They may or may not be of American origin.
