Derivation of the word oaktag

I knew the word growing up in NYC in the 50s-60s. I'm pretty sure I
learned it from my mother, who was an art teacher in the public high
schools. She had herself grown up in NYC (born 1922) and was an amateur
artist and an interior decorator before becoming a teacher.
