CHINESE MENU

THE FLIGHT OF THE LAPWING:
A NAVAL OFFICER'S JOTTINGS IN CHINA, FORMOSA AND JAPAN
by Henry Noel SHort
London: Longmans, Green & Co.
1881

There is a full Chinese menu in the Appendix. "Mandarin Duck," is possibly of interest, although OED has 1880 for "Pekin Duck."

BEACHCOMBING, MAPE

NA MOTU:
OR, REEF ROVINGS IN THE SOUTH SEAS;
A NARRATIVE OF ADVENTURES AT THE HAWAIIAN, GEORGIAN AND SOCIETY ISLANDS
by Edward T. Perkins
New York: Pudney & Russell
1854

I had found the first "so long" in here and it looked like a good book, so I put it on reserve and finished it today. These South Seas whaling books are chock full of stuff.
Many of these aren't OED antedates, but are second cites.

Pg. 26: ..."learning the ropes"....
Pg. 68: ...seamen wearing "claw-hammer jackets" (dress-coats) ashore.
Pg. 116: ...clean Panama hats, (their rims invariably drooped,).... (A second OED cite--ed.)
Pg. 202: ..."The Hair of Pele"... (Also pg. 216--ed.)
Pg. 236: _feis_ (Mentioned many times; a second OED cite--ed.)
Pg. 254: ..._guavas_ or _mapes_.... (I just saw that the revised OED has "Mape," a Tahitian chestnut, from 1888--ed.)
Pg. 338: The never-failing _miti_, made of the expressed milk of the old cocoanut and sea-water, and white as the nourishing beverage itself, was brought to us in two plates. ("Miti" not in OED?--ed.)
Pg. 343: A Jamaica negro, who had been "beach-combing among the islands, a mischief-making fellow....
(OED has "beach-combing" from 1865--ed.)
