I remember some comments from a young Canadian woman in 1996. She had to
have been in her early to mid20s at the time. This was in the US & she was
the only Canadian. Someone referred to "Americans" once and she mentioned
this issue in a sort of off-hand way -- definitely not "insisting" -- more
in a tone of "well, everybody knows this, or should know it, but it's not
worth making a big deal about it". I don't remember her exact words but it
was probably something like "Well, of course, we're Americans too" or
"There *are* other Americans". Unfortunately I don't remember the context
of this remark.
Interestingly, I also remember that she herself referred to "Americans"
meaning US folks, & here I do remember her words: "Americans are so funny
about Thanksgiving." So maybe it's a context/convenience thing for
Canadians too?
